The New York Surf kicked off its United Women’s Soccer season with a 1-0 victory over the Western New York Flash at SUNY-Maritime in the Bronx Sunday.

Megan O’Connor’s 14th-minute goal, off a Brooke Salmon assist, turned out to be the difference.

The teams will meet again next Saturday.

In New England, the expansion Rochester Lady Lancers did not fare as well as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the New England Mutiny.

Dylan Patterson became the first Lady Lancer to score in a UWS match, tallying in the 62nd minute.

Rochester opened its season with a 6-0 defeat at New Jersey Copa FC Saturday night.

The Lady Lancers will host the same side in their home opener at Aquinas Institute in Rochester, N.Y. at 1 p.m. next Sunday. That match will be followed by the Lancers’ men’s season and home opener against the Dayton Dynamo in a National Premier Soccer League game at 4 p.m.
