CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Not even the addition of Derrick Etienne, Jr. could save Red Bulls II from a losing fate Thursday night.
The Independence rolled to a 5-1 United Soccer League victory over New York (3-3-2).
Etienne, Jr., a member of the Red Bulls squad, was added to the NYRBII side prior to the kickoff.
Junior Flemmings gave the Red Bulls II a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, burying a toe-poke shot at the near post.
Charlotte answered with two goals within a five-minute span. Jorge Herrera finished a rebound in the 38th minute. Callum Ross gave the Independence the lead in the 43rd on a header.
In the second-half, the Independence struck three more goals from Enzo Martinez (51st minute), David Estrada (82nd minute) and Jaime Saij (90+, stoppage time).
Red Bulls II returns home to Red Bull Arena on Sunday, where they will take on LA Galaxy II at 9 p.m.
